Where is the aura?

‘”Don’t inflate one’s stature too high, that the wind could sweep you away,or don’t stoop too low, that a goat could graze you down”,have you heard about this Bangla proverb? The former case is happening to the outgoing President of United States of America. His arrogance and super macist attitude has literally swept away the long instilled aura of respect and awe, the world nurtured for his exalted country.Which is considered the epitome of justice, human rights and ofcourse democracy. He stands thoroughly disgraced as does his beloved country, to whom he vowed to make it great again. What a great farewell gesture he had staged! Exhorting his own few misguided country men to ambush the very seat of democracy, the State Capitol. His warcry for January 6 rally of his supporters was, “Be there, will be wild”.

It’s indeed a grotesque example of how a single person’s whims and selfish intentions could jolt the very edifice of the notion, America stood tall on, and that’s democracy. The events of 6th January, when the lame duck President ‘s supporters took the Capitol on ransom, will take  for Americans, a very long and arduous time to erase. There is serious apprehensions that it could ever retrieve the lost glory,an aura , it commanded previously among the countries of the world. The floodgate of tweets and memes upon it is anything to go by. It’s really an unbelievable sight that senators were ducking under the tables to escape the hooligans(I find no other word to describe them). The common decorum and rules of civility utterly forgotten by the protesters. It were like a scene of Hollywood movie, only the villain here is their own prejudiced country men, insisting on a so called ‘revolution’.

The President had evidently created a demagogue, gone out of control. The historians have pointed out that theCapitol was breached only the second time after the British attacked it and set it on fire during the war of 1812. Contemporary analysts are hoping it will be the last. The ambush, in which four people have lost their lives is going to haunt them for the time to come. The matter of accepting defeat gracefully, turned to ignominy, which could have been easily avoided if one person deemed it fit, to do so.

Friends, the event unfolded on the day when America lost about 3.9 K lives due to Covid and hospitalization reached a record 1,30,834 late on Tuesday. Marjorie Bessel, the chief clinical officer at a major hospital network in Arizona said, ” Most Americans don’t want to know,  don’t want to acknowledge, don’t want to recognize and certainly _ even as it’s descending upon us _ do not appear to understand the dire circumstances that we are facing”
We all sincerely hope the tide would be turned for the better after 20th January when the new President takes office. We all like to see the America great again!
I only want to add-
“Vanity is the quicksand of reason”- George Sand.
Adieu for now.

    1. He is the living lesson, how vanity can have such disastrous consequences. To accept defeat gracefully would have saved his image, but it was not to be. Thank you Kate, for reading the post.β™₯️

  1. The legacy of the madman may haunt us for a while, but the tide has turned. Truth and decency have returned to the White House with the new administration. I have high hopes that we can rebuild our democracy and repair relationships in the international community. Your post is a pretty accurate assessment of the horrific last four years, and most Americans are eager to put those terrible times behind us.
