A Piece of Memory

Hello friends, I greet you all on the first day of February. The winter is ready to bid adieu and spring is waiting on the wings to make it presence felt in our Northern hemisphere. Let’s hope the advent of spring bring good luck, health and happiness to all of us. Previously I have shared a poem from earlier days of our marriage. During that era of arranged marriages the real courtship used to begin after the marriage is finalised and the medium of communication was chiefly through exchange of letters.

Like, earlier, this time too an old well worn piece of pages resurfaced from the old documents. It was really a very sweet surprise to find it was the letter written by my would be hubby at that time. The more heart warming was the small piece of impromptu poem written by him to express his emotions, on being alone on the occasion of Diwali. In today’s fast paced life there is indeed no room or practicality for exchanging letters between the couples. There are far convenient ways to do so, yet the letters had their own charm. The anticipation and the thrill of receiving, opening and reading them is quite unmatched.

It’s a bit personal but the genuine emotions shared compelled me to share it with you. So here it is:

“It was a moonless night.

Evewhere I found people enjoying,

Wearing new clothes, having sweets

And wandering couples.

Every house has been decorated

And garlanded with fairy lights.

Everybody is celebrating,

The auspicious day around me.

Every burst of crackers makes

The children bright.

I tried to enjoy everything in my sight,

But I could not.

I discovered, I lost something,

What, when and how?

I found

It was the moonless night.”

Friends, it may sound a little naive but some emotions remain unchanged through test of time.

Thanks for reading. Hope you may like it. Keep the candle of hope and happiness burning and spread the light everywhere.

Adieu for now.

A rejoinder: Coincidentally today is the moonless night too!

  1. A heart warming poem by your husband Mousumi. Letters were indeed precious those days and words can not describe how much warmth we had in opening a letter with all that enthusiasm and cheer.
